If by "it", you mean the laptop, then the laptop mac address was already registered? I thought the NAT box was there before? Isn't the nat box at parent's place? I must have missed a step here. The cable modem uses the mac address of the equipment (pc, laptop, router, etc) that plugs into the cable modem for registration purposes, not the cable modem mac itself.
