from Cornell. There must be *something* they can do when parents refuse to pay up. You will have to pay eventually, but it should be worth it.

If they genuinely can't afford it, then the assessment must be wrong. Surely the parental contribution is means-tested? It is in the UK, but obviously I don't have a clue how this translates across the Atlantic.

Otherwise, perhaps you need to look into becoming legally independant from your parents, so that your financial situation can be assessed without taking them into account.
