(This is more for LP than you.)

While I understand that "s/string1/string2/" is the Linux-style RegEx notation, it is not what I am familiar with. If I wanted to replace a single occurrence of a literal string inside another string called big_string, I would do this:

sub(/dog/, "cat", big_string)

If I wanted to get all strings starting with "d" and ending with "g" (including the word "dg"), I'd do this:

gsub(/d[a-z]*g/, "cat", big_string)

I am most familiar with Thompson AWK.
