I've used that notation before, and I have no idea how the Linux stuff works (I've never, ever used it). But I've seen it used on the board here enough that I got the gist of it being a "search & replace" notation. Since the RegEx aspect of the innards was rarely spelled out, I didn't really pick up on it. Trying to grasp it intuitively means that we don't always get the "right" rules, but it works for us.
So, believe it or not, that's your problem. The truth is, I understood what he was getting at without a problem - probably because I didn't know the "correct" system to use.
And you misread his response to you. He stated that he was not trying to be "syntactically correct", as in using proper RegEx notation. In fact, he wasn't using _any_ RegEx notation other than the function operator "s" and its delimeters. To him, and to the person he replied to, the * was a simple single-char wildcard.
Explaining what he was doing is different than saying he didn't want to be corrected. Since he wasn't wrong (from his POV), the correction was inappropriate. |
