You should be aware that it is primarily tribal in origin, pre-dating and outside of the islamic religion. You should be aware that there are several "rationales" for it - none of them good. You should be aware that the practice is know to occur as far as into Afghanistan. It is in both the "black" african and in the arabic / arab-african cultures. It also extends down into non-islamic regions such as Uganda. I agree it is not nice. Neither is loosing an eye. Loosing fingers are extremely painful also. Professionally, I get to deal with consequences from both of those injuries. "Black Humour" does happen.
