What might NOT be myth is that these guys (one the son of a scrapyard/army surplus owner) found a live jato bottle accidentally included in a shipment of army surplus, lived out in the desert where there were old mine railroads, and decided to put the JATO bottle on a mine cart to build a rocket sled, and THEN decided to put a car body on top of the mine cart, for fun.
No lighting it off while driving, no going airborne, a lot of detailed engineering on how they mated the JATO bottle and the old car body to the existing mine cart.
