considering time and circumstance.

I think the real problem is one that any american politician has when they try to make nuanced statements on complex or difficult issues -- it's always fairly easy to reduce it to a nutshell summary that misleads more than it informs.

Unfortunately, many politicians see that as a good thing, and gleefully resort to pithy, simplistic reductions that elicit the desired kneejerk responses. This is in my opinion a key identifying characteristic of the conservative/right-wing strategy since at least the 70's.

Bush's lies vs Kerry's lies; apples vs oranges.
Kerry at least is trying to clarify issues, Bush is just trying to 'simplify' them.
