were a pair of crystaline stones which were given in ancient times by God to his prophet or high priest which put that person in direct contact with God. There may have been more than 1 set. The Bible indicates that these were set in a small frame and tied with a ribbon to the ephod or breastplate worn by Israel's high priest.

One theory I've heard is that the frame was a kind of pair of wire triangles on a hinge that when unfolded could be a kind of a pair of "glasses" that would bridge the nose, and when folded the would form the well known star of david.

They aren't mentioned in the Bible after the first destruction of the temple and the period of Babylonian captivity.

A set was said given to Joseph Smith to translate the Book of Mormon. They were returned after the translation was made to the angel who had given them to him.
