not XMMS or the audio system. I had (what I assume is) the same problem: no sound in the video. I was a bit surprised, as I frequently just pause XMMS to hear other stuff, and have never had a problem. So I fired up xine on a random video, and got sound from there just fine.

Disclaimer: My work machine (which I'm on right now) is still using OSS drivers, not ALSA. But I've found ALSA (which is on my home machine and my laptop, and where I also tend to pause XMMS to play other stuff without trouble) to be more robust than the OSS drivers, so I doubt there'd be problems there which don't exist in the OSS drivers.
