On a quick read the quotes (generally given out of context) seem to support a view that early american figures generally considered themselves to be christians, and that christian values and principles informed their thinking; but they also seem to support a view that freedom of thought and belief were also esential, and that the power of the state was not to impose on religous freedom, or impose particular religous doctrines on the citizenry.
