I think most Christians have believed since very early in church history that Christianity requires some sort of acceptance of Trinitarianism, which Unitarians and Deists do not do and have never done. I don't think it's necessary to delve into details to say they could only be considered Christians by a pretty loose definition of Christianity, looser than many Christians would agree to.
