I'd only heard of the idea of pinching people who aren't wearing green from the Simpsons. Is it an American thing, an Irish thing or is it a worldwide thing that I just haven't noticed?

BTW, I am wearing green; a green T-shirt and green coat, as it happens, but only because:
1. I always wear a green coat, when I wear a coat.
2. The green T-shirt was handy, and I needed a clean T-shirt today.
3. I like green.
