strengthen our position when debating in the present, WE all tend to hear what WE want to hear when looking at the writings of those who came before us...it's downright easy to build a case for either of two diametrically opposed philosphical positions
Goggle for "Thomas Jefferson Quotes" and you'll come up with a variety of pages that run the gamut from:
"In spite of Christian right attempts to rewrite history to make Jefferson into a Christian, little about his philosophy resembles that of Christianity." Although Jefferson believed in a Creator, his concept of it resembled that of the god of deism (the term "Nature's God" used by deists of the time). With his scientific bent, Jefferson sought to organize his thoughts on religion. He rejected the superstitions and mysticism of Christianity and even went so far as to edit the gospels, removing the miracles and mysticism of Jesus (see The Jefferson Bible) leaving only what he deemed the correct moral philosophy of Jesus. clicky
to
"Thomas Jefferson believed that the ethical system of Jesus was the finest the world has ever seen. ... He presented these teachings, along with the essential events of the life of Jesus, in one continuous narrative." - also speaking about the Jefferson Bible.
here's one of his most famous:
"What an effort... of bigotry in politics and religion have we gone through! The barbarians really flattered themselves they should be able to bring back the times of Vandalism, when ignorance put everything into the hands of power and priestcraft. All advances in science were proscribed as innovations. They pretended to praise and encourage education, but it was to be the education of our ancestors. We were to look backwards, not forwards, for improvement." --Thomas Jefferson to Joseph Priestley, 1801. ME 10:228 clicky - My take is that he believed in a creator and a Christian philosophy, but had serious problems with organized religion(s)
Therefore, I gotta agree with Illiad, primary references are a requisit to any informed debate... and in my opinion, the link you provided does little to add to the substance of the debate due to it's obvious leanings... On the other hand, here's some linky's just for fun!
