When I was really little and still in a playpen, my parents would give me a small hammer and a piece of wood to bang on when they were building anything for the house. I know that would seem neglectful and dangerous to today's parenting groups (I was born in 1976), but the most I ever got was a sore thumb - which sure taught me fine motor control and hand to eye coordination at an early age. It also developped a strong desire to build and fix things later in life, like computers and car repair.
