Math theory: What kind of statement is 1+1=2? by jugulum 2004-03-17 08:57:21
Is it an axiom? A theorem, provable using more basic axioms? Or is it just the name we give to an observation?

I asked my abstract algebra professor, and he said "observation" after a few seconds' thought. But he had to think about it, so I'm not entirely confident in his answer. Does anyone know anything else about it?

  I'd say it's a religion. >:) (n/t) by winsmith2004-03-17 08:59:59
If you can call that an observation, then by MajorG172004-03-17 08:59:59
Hmm. I suppose the "observation" by jugulum2004-03-17 12:34:50
I believe it can be proved through set theory. by Irrelevant2004-03-17 09:01:24
