However, like any politicians, they were likely to say one thing in public, but then do another when push came to shove. One of those guys wrote the text for the First Amendment. That doesn't sound to me like he was so hot-to-trot about injecting religion into governement.

Where is Christianity mentioned in the Constitution (our supreme law of the land) or the Declaration of Independence? Cite me ONE reference (and it has to be CHRISTIANITY not an amorphous reference to the Creator or God).
