I dunno if it was an urban legend, but I heard they trialled it a few years ago and found the data was being rebroadcast by every lamp post between the computer and the main office. I guess the same applies to cable modems? I'm guessing you could read the data from every modem on the same cable run as you, with a suitably modified modem?
