Let's argue about the REAL enemy: Michael Powell and the FCC.
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but the FCC doesn't stand for Federal Censorship Commission. But that's exactly what they're doing. They're stomping on the free speech rights of broadcasters that I thought were guaranteed us in the Constitution.
Why do we leave the concept of broadcast decency up to a panel of five people? Why do we allow the chairman of the FCC to conduct personal vendettas instead of remaining a fair and impartial official? Why do we insist on dumbing down our television and radio for children, at the expense of entertainment for mature adults?
Why do we get bent out of shape over someone, in a moment of excitement, using a so-called profane word? Why does a split-second image of a partially covered breast offend so much of America? Why is this country so upset over morning radio DJs being off-color?
It absolutely infuriates me to see this country taking giant steps backward in terms of maturity. Are we, as a nation, incapable of handling someone talking about sex on the air? Is the sound of a four-letter word beyond our ability to process? What about this do we need to be protected from?
I swear, if I hear one more person defend this playing to the lowest common denominator by saying it's for the children, I'm going to stomp their baby. We are not all children in this country. Many of us do not have children, and don't appreciate everything we can see on television or hear on the radio being dumbed down for them. The government is not a parent, and it shouldn't take the place of one.
It would be one thing if we had firm lines that couldn't be crossed. But for the most part, those lines don't exist. Oh, we can show a breast, but no areola or nipple. We can show a bare butt, but only on someone up to a certain age. We can show genitals, but not penetration. And not in an aroused state, either.
We have a list of seven dirty words, but wait! Supposedly, the rule is that you can't use them in a sexual or excretory fashion, but that's been turned on its ear. And subject matter is apparently off-limits, but nobody seems to know WHAT subject matter until a broadcaster breaches it, and is then facing fines for breaking a rule that nobody said was a rule.
When did the FCC move from regulating interstate communication to regulating speech? Why are they suddenly the morality police? And how long before they act on US-based internet sites that might contain nudity or profanity?
Left up to Michael Powell, it'll happen the same day one of his kids accidentally stumbles across some porn. When the FCC starts levying $500,000 fines against internet users, will that be when enough is finally enough? |
