Question of the Day! by kickstart2006-11-19 12:26:49
We were Dirt Poor... by Kickstart2004-03-17 00:37:44
you had a QUARTER? by rottweiler 2004-03-17 07:01:54
... rich kid ...

Seriously, no exaggeration: you were richer than me. I remember getting a roll of pennies for Christmas from my oldest brother who had been drafted into the Navy (I was in the 3rd grade). It was the first money I had ever seen or had of my own. Christmas was a time for dinner where everyone got a chunk of turkey and much food was available. It was lovely. My presents each year consisted of new underwear and an outfit (all sewn by my Mom) and a matching outfit for my one doll. I never had any store-bought clothing until high school unless it was a hand-me-down from my 3 older sisters ... that they got originally from the Catholic charity store. I never ate out (even at McD's) until I had my own money (started waiting tables at 13). I still remember the first glorious french fry I ever ate. It was heaven. I "wasted" my first paycheck on buying a "REAL STORE BOUGHT" pair of blue jeans.

But I had a wonderful childhood and never realized we were poor. We didn't have a tv that worked much ... the vacuum tubes kept blowing. No great loss. My parents splurged each summer and paid for a family membership at the pool (about 2 miles away). We would walk/run/play on the way there almost everyday and spend glorious hours hanging out.

What we did have was parents who were determined that all 6 of their children would be well educated and go to college: no matter what. And except for one black sheep, we all did.
