Ireland examines drinking problem for Patty's Day? by Ravenlock2006-11-19 12:55:59
Simmilar problem in other places with all by ideur2004-03-17 05:27:49
Sure, but did you read the article? by Ravenlock 2004-03-17 06:08:02
I realize it probably registered in my head as strongly as it did because of the stereotype - not a good thing - but the statistics quoted in the article are pretty scary.

"...a 49 percent jump in per capita consumption from 1989 to 2001. On average, a person older than 15 now drinks 14.5 liters of pure alcohol per year."

"The Department of Health estimates that alcohol-related problems like car accidents and health conditions cost the economy nearly $3 billion each year, of which more than $1 billion is due to employees' calling in sick with hangovers."

"60 percent of 15-to-17-year-olds drink regularly and that most of them consume around eight drinks on 'a good night out.'"

Granted, I had a pretty tame upbringing, but even the "bad" kids at my high school - hell, even the heavy drinkers I know now - don't compare to the anecdote about a "typical" Irish 18 year old...

"...six half-liter cans of beer, about a pint apiece, and a six-ounce bottle of vodka before entering the club where Murphy died, plus four pints of beer and two bottles of a mixed vodka drink once inside. He said that had made him 'tipsy.'"
