I just installed firefox last night and I have yet to really use it, so I can't help you there I'm afraid. And concerning your linux box debian might be a good idea for that box. It's got a nice packaging system, and the packages are binaries. Either that or you first get your main box up with linux first and then use distcc (compile programs on several boxen =).
