though I'm not so certain how well a quick lawyerly letter would work.

if money is an issue, you should be able to find an attorney willing to take the case on contingency... it'll mean they'll take a larger piece of the monetary award, but it also means you don't pay anything upfront (generally) or if you don't win an award.

Find an attorney that specializes in contract law -- not one of those personal injury types that advertises on TV. Your state bar should have a lawyer referal service -- give them a call.
