My husband and I once went on a trip across Canada, intended to camp the whole way. In April. We got to our first night's stop in Calgary, only to discover that campgrounds weren't open to tenters (RVs only). There is some kind of law in most places that prohibits tenting until May 1st.
We only found 2 campsites in the whole trip (from BC to Ontario) that would let us camp, and boy it was chilly! Below zero at least, though probably not more than -5C. We had lots of warm sleeping bags and blankets though, and we were fine. Here's a tip though:
- wear long pyjamas (full pants, full long-sleeved shirt)
- wear warm socks
- make sure you are sleeping ON something warm (layered blankets, foamy)
- have one lighter blanket directly next to your body, to cocoon yourself in and protect against drafts
- have one thick blanket (or sleeping bag) on top for the bulk of the warmth
You will be toasty that way. Though midnight bathroom trips just really suck.
