I've paid it attention on startup in Gentoo, and it always seems to skip the journal replay - even when the drive was uncleanly mounted* - because the partition is mounted read-only. Erm, yeah. It's the root partition...it NEEDS to be mounted, so that fsck can be found. ;) *flaky kernel module to blame
