inaccuracy involved in the calculation, a feeling that you compretely lack if the calculations are done with an electronic device.

At university they invented a special flavor of pascal the time I was a student. With every operand went the uppermost and the lowermost value this operand could have achieved due to miscalculation in the previous operations. In the end you got three values: the traditionally calculated one and the biggest one possible if all mistakes where adding up und the lowest one given all mistakes where shrinking the actual value.

I learned two things: stick with simple, short operations (avoid iterations whereever possible) and use all possible significance for data storage. There is no thing like a variable to precise for storing.

Especially the first is essential if you're using an abacus.
