Did anyone really use abacii? They get more and more complex for things like multiplication and powers. Slide rules are much more reliable in my opinion. If you know what you're doing, and know your log tables, you can go pretty quickly on these things. Of course, the speed is inversely proportional to the precision you want on the calculations, but with a trained eye you can easily get 3-4 sig-figs. Go here to learn more.
