if old versions of Mozilla or Firebird are still installed. They seem to fixed most of the problems with the .8 installer but maybe not all. There are huge problems if any old extensions are running during the install. I'd delete all of them. Tabs do not require any extensions as said before. Remove all of the above and try a fresh reinstall. Hopefully that will cure it.
