the LCDs get very slow in the cold and so its rough shooting with them...I've actually bought myself a coat that has an inside pocket big enough to fit my SLR body inside to keep it warm. The AE-1 is a workhorse, I would plan on using it as your primary actually using the digital only to 'see if it works' to begin with...expecially if the times you get to do this are few and far inbetween.
