  I guess there is one problem for Germans by UnFair 2004-03-09 10:49:30
concerning this "proud" discussion which lies in the meaning of the german "stolz". In German this word is used only for the meaning arrogance or vanity. So saying to be "proud being a german" will be understood by the vast majority of other Germans that the person stating it thinks German is superior to all other nationalities.

There had been to many stupids in this country who were acting as if Germany would truly be above all others and It had done no good. Only now nobody trusts a German with weapons no more.

But the english proud involves also upright and honest. I would proudly claim to be German myself for the latter but because Germans are to well known for the first meaning I will not. At least not in german language.
