A while back, DNB suggested we have a regular server and games to play for UFies. The game of choice was W:ET. Why? Well...
It's FREE. It's available for Linux and Windows. It's a standalone game - you do not need anything else to play the game. Click here to download (by clicking on Enemy Territory in the menu. WARNING: Site is in Flash!) or Click here to download (No flash required.) This is the README; it gives the Windows requirements. (The Linux requirements are similar.) If you would prefer, Bittorrent files are available from ID Software. Using Bittorrent is recommended. Many people have noticed that the Windows installer from the download sites have been corrupt, while Bittorrent has been OK.
To play on the UF:ET server, you need the following extra files:
These contain the UF:ET campaign file, and the non-standard map we play, Caen. Put both of them in your $ETDIR/etmain directory.
And these are the files required for the mod of the server we use, ETpro. Place these in your $ETDIR/etpro directory. (You will probably have to create this folder.)
IMPORTANT: These are the rules. FOLLOW THEM!
Also important: If the teams are very unbalanced against you, say something about it to the other team. If they've got the UFie spirit, they should be willing to switch some players around to even things out. If they're very unbalanced towards you, I know how tempting it is to take advantage of it, but please try to make things more balanced. It ensures that everyone enjoys the game, not just the better team.
As of 2004/02/28, Egaeus has enabled Punkbuster. Some people have expressed their concerns about PB, but unfortunately, quoth Egaeus, "circumstances have warranted it". You will need to have an updated version of PB enabled in order to play.
FireballMatt used to host our server, but is having hosting difficulties.
Currently, Egaeus is hosting (page here). You can find the server status (including current players) here.
There is a Teamspeak server at blueflubberball.dyndns.org - thanks Stacato!
Stare suspiciously at everyone you see holding a knife? >:) Here's some advice from DNB.
And here's some more, this time by JillSwift.
I'm currently trying to persuade people to move the long term discussions to this diary, as they are currently spread across at least three diaries, so finding anything specific is getting quite tricky.
Please note that in the discussions of rules, definitions, etc, DNB and Egaeus have The Last Word, because they are our admins. If you don't like what they say, get on the server and frag 'em!
Oh, and remember that this is for fun! We love fun!
