where you could bring in each and every (non-electronic and non-living) aid that you saw fit, including any amount of books as long as they fit onto your desk... I liked them because they were never by even the slightest margin of imagination about testing memorized knowledge, which I consider inherently stupid for an exam, as Einstein said "Never memorize anything you can look up." Instead they tested if you have understood your material and can apply it to new contexts, and far more thoroughly than those other exams usually did...
