Yes, Illiad "owns" the board. Yes, he and his staff of moderators DO have the authority to decide what is, and IS NOT acceptable.
However... without all of you (yes, ALL of you) this is nothing but another webcomic site. Those are a dime a dozen, but this place is, and will continue to be, a special place where people can communicate, develop relationships and foster friendships with a diverse group of people from around the world - in short, from a sociological stand point, UF is a VERY UNIQUE hybrid electronic COMMUNITY.
As with all communities, there are times where events cause the members of that community to come together, and other times, events will create devisiveness. THAT'S NATURAL.
But because we aren't linked by a common locality, and ARE linked by a common interest, WE must be able to police ourselves - institutionalized policies are helpful guidelines - but no guideline, or no person, can prevent you from posting snide or insulting messages. Yes, you can be sanctioned via modding (or worse), but ultimately, the responsibility is yours to act within the communal standards of OUR community. Or leave. That will remain your choice unless you are so far outside the bounds of what is acceptable here that you are removed...
As with any community, individuals come and go, but unless a critical mass is maintained, this place WILL wither and die. That's the nature of communites -they must be nurtured and supported.
Most of us lurked for a while (even years) as "the silent majority" before "joining" the active voice of this community. If these vitriolic conversations continue, you will make this a place potential/prospective "active" members will NOT want to go... If you want to rant and make personal attacks, there are a plethora of web communites where you can do so. But if you continue to do so here, you will be responsible for bringing about the end of UF as we know it. As have many of us, I feel a special bond with the folks here - we are a diverse, interesting, skilled, supportive and highly entertaining community - we have all invested of ourselves to be here, and must continue to do so in order for this to continue to be the vibrant, flourishing community it is at present.
If there is a topic I want to join, I'll do so. If I know it will get my dander up, oft times I decline, or I word my posts carefully and explain why I said what I said (ok, I try to ;-) ... If it upsets you, don't go there. If you feel the need to insult someone, STOP - think about it for a while - if you still feel it's needed, I won't stop you, but by taking that extra time, you may feel it best to re-think or re-word your response...
Please, as a favor to those of us who want to see that this remains viable as a gathering place, take the time to think about the way you are communicating, read (or re-read) the FAQS, be considerate, and respect the diversity in experiences, opinions and expertise that makes this a special place. |
