alright, so bootstrapping wont be the big time by friareriner2004-02-16 12:07:29

The longest things to compile are:

GCC, QT and any KDE libs... if you emerge kde expect it to take over a day to complete. Gnome on the other hand will not take as long and if you try one of the many other window managers expect it to go reasonably quick.(other window managers can use kde and gnome programs and while kde is nice it's bloat ware... so if you emerge *any* kde program at all it will require alot of kde libs... more than gnome does of gnome libs and the kde ones take awhile... I do like kde stuff but I wont run them as it's compile time is hell)

X isn't so awful but remember when you emerge DRI if you have a non nvidia card to specify what video card your using so it grabs and compiles it for right card. If your using nvidia you don't use dri you grab nvidia-kernel and put that in then add it to the /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-(your kernel version) and set some configs in the /etc/modules directory for it. It will use nvidias own glx as well. For your kernel btw I recommend turning on OSS built in drivers and your sound cards as a module. Load the soundcard module and the OSS will load on it's own so all based covered.
