It's based on BSD, but it does have differences, some subtle, some not-so-subtle. There also seems to be (in my experience) considerably less documentation about the internal functioning of OSX than there is for Linux or a true BSD. It's fine for a desktop, but it can be a royal PITA as a server OS for those reasons.
