Heavy geeking follows: IF you are using mod_perl AND you run perl < 5.8 AND you have significant amounts of shared sections AND you have a situation where you kill threads on a semi regular basis, (through, for instance, the "MaxRequestsPerChild" mechanism in apache) THEN you will require your usual amount of ram PLUS some of the previous shared section RAM for every new child process after each primary process restart. Comes down to not remembering to free the shared section RAM during a HUP. We should be able to perturb this out of the way with a bit of thinking. We'll test this theory right in the middle of our most busy time, just to annoy you all. Mebbe not.
