So, how do you deal with someone, who refuses... by swisscheese2004-02-10 16:06:10
There is only one thing that works is, by Slamlander 2004-02-10 18:03:19
to put the entire topic on the taboo list. This usually covers both religion and politics. Neither of those topics are conducive to getting work done. If the party insists then complain to your upline that they are interfereing with your productivity. This also applies to fraternization issues (don't fish off the company pier).

Most managers are familiar with the problem, it's quite common. In fact, it's so common that you'll probably find that it's dealt with, to some degree, in your employee handbook, if you are in a decent-sized company. The normally recommended policies are what I have stated above.

If you have been guilty of violating said policies yourself then you can use the excuse that your boss has spoken to you about it and that religious and political topics are now forbidden for you in the workplace. Yes, go ahead and blame him. Talk to him first though. I can't imagine a decent manager not going along with it. I would, and I have done so in the past. Any manager worth their salt will welcome cooperation towards keeping proper focus, in the work environment. Also, having been a manager in California, extraenous discussion topics risk exposing the company to legal liabilities, I was always happy to squelsh such discussion on sight. I usually thought favorably of staff that asked for such cooperation.
