Argued with each other all the time, probably didn't convince their fellow philosophers. And they cared more about the art: one orator argued so well his audience couldn't do anything but agree with him. And then we would pull apart his own argument and finally convince his audience of the opposite.

I still like the Socratic M3thod: put the other person on the defensive, deflecting their attacks with questions.
