and often they just can't stand to not win the arguement.

Others just can't believe that an intelligent, well-informed, open-minded person isn't convinced by their arguements, or that practical experience might lead one to say "Your logic is impecable, and persuasive, but things don't seem to work that way in the real world". They think "It makes sense, it's logical; it must therefore be true.
