you also might be able to find utils to reconstruct or things in where it stored email stuff. If it's the type of laws I think he's breaking realize it's international law he may also be breaking in several countries and if someone complains who knows what happens other than the basics of equipment likely will get seized. Btw this might work if his new employer wants to keep an eye on him. You could try this on the system in question tho. Oh and if you have some sort of nickname that is unsual for him you can always slap it in google and try the same with his real name and see what you get back.(people that do umm certain things tend to be a bit more bold in their circles than they are offline)
