A 4-yr degree is not appropriate nor necessary for many people. It no more guarantees a thinking society than not having a degree indicates ignorance. Consider all the successful CEOs that aschewed university. Consider the Ph.Ds who are now driving taxis. Many of your HS grads (or never grads) are doing something more than flipping burgers (besides it's usually someone with a liberal arts B.A. :). Where do you think all the carpenters, plumbers and electricians come from? And how crappy would our lives be without them?
