Warning: Work Rant. Highly Agitated Geek.
I just got a call from Harvard's Proteomics Group--a conference call my immediate supervisor was supposed to take, but he's not in yet this morning. We're working on a project with them to sequence thousands and thousands of samples. Apparently, this large scale project is supposed to be done by the end of the month. According to Harvard, my boss says we're "Right on track!" which couldn't be farther from the truth.
Can someone tell me why I'm hearing this for the first time from people I wasn't even supposed to be talking to this morning? My supervisor's been bad about communication lately, alright down right hideous some days, but shouldn't I hear about long standing project deadlines from my own supervisor? Or maybe my department head?
And there are some bad things about Bio to take into consideration as well. Built into the process is a 2.5 hour wait, and yes that's "optimized". I can process about 100 samples in 6 hours. There's about a hundred on each plate, we're on plate 4 of 50.
I have my own sequencing project to do, too. Also needs to be done by the end of the month. Uses the same physical resources--PCR machines, sequencer--and the same reagents. There's also the daily sequencing for other researchers at our institute, since we're the Core Facility. And I'm starting to get twitchy because my boss's protocol has me touching off 1 micro-liter of primer into all of these reactions by hand when we have the automation to do the setups on the robots. He just hasn't made it a "priority" with the alpha-geek to get it done.
I feel like there's an element of friendly fire going on here. My boss has had information for weeks, nigh months, and hasn't passed it on. I hear more from people outside of my workgroup than I do from him. And it makes me really nervous and frustrated.
Okay, UFies. What should I do?
