It is more about options. Certificates without experience IMHO are mostly useless but are great for making you an expert in what you do. As long as a need for that expertice exists it can be a very good life.

The BS/BA degree usually means that while you are not a technical expert you are usually flexible enough to learn what needs to be done. You can still add certifications to move towards expert status but you are less vulnerable to technology changes.

This is the reason at 30 years old I want back and got a degree instead of becoming a nuclear recycling specialist.
