Question by Glytch782004-02-10 07:30:14
CS vs. IS by Nashville 2004-02-10 08:28:19
They come with different names and in different flavors, but most of your college IT courses break down to follow one of two primary paths:

Computer Science - Focus on computers as an "end" - the primary subject matter. These are the guys in blue jeans and hiking boots. They generally don't make quite as much as the MIS guys (see below) - but as they're more into it for the science/theory than the money in the first place, they tend to be happier and sleep better at nights.

Information Systems/Management information Systems - Focus on computers as a "means" - i.e., as support tools for what corporate America considers the real "end", which are the business processes. These are the guys in suits and loafers. The daily suit-and-tie routine can get uncomfortable at times; the MIS types can afford the good stuff after a while, tho - plus selling your soul tends to reduce chafing somewhat.
