Listen up VeriSign guys, tell you what: Even if it didn't cause problems with a whole bunch of services. If I make a typo in an URL I want to know about that ASAP, not wait for some bloody search site to load.

Yeah, great... What users were that exactly? Those who used the engine or those who closed the page in disgust? And of those 84%, how many understood the negative implications and how many will keep that opinion after they experienced them?
