email swamp by stacato2004-02-10 02:42:30
  Only 41336 emails? Amateurs! ;) by Cural 2004-02-10 05:18:12
Actually, this story sort of reminds me of my college days, when I helped to take down the mail system for a couple of days... ;)

I have this one friend who decided, for some reason, to setup a rule on his email account that any emails he receives from me is to be forwarded back to me ten times. So, whenever I send him an email, I get ten copies of it back.

So instead of simply deleting these emails, I figured I'd get even, and setup a similar rule. So, whenever he sent me an email, I'd send ten copies back to him.

Well, it doesn't take a genius to guess what happened next... :)

The entire mail server was swamped, and got shut down for 2-3 days! My email account, and my friend's, both had to be deleted, then rebuilt, and we were both told what we had unintentionally done, and to not do that again. I think there must have been around a million emails in there by the time the server got shut down... :)
