From what I've heard, the current iBooks and Tibooks are nearly indestructable. I'm sure everybody's seen the pictures of the baked apple. If she's not doing anything that would be windows-specific, the iBook may well be the way to go. I've got a friend with a fairly recent HP notebook. His has held up OK, but he doesn't really take it anywhere or use it at home all that much.
