hp knows how to build a printer and I have never really ventured into the pc world but I have not heard any real horror stories about them (and I have worked on a few, mostly MS not HP issues)

Sony is good if you are looking for something that tends to be more portable. From what I have worked on for these, they tend to be quite decent machines although sometimes a bit high on the price tag

Apple, well - most of the time this is for those who like that line of OS. Not a bad machine at all - but can be quite high on price when compared to pc's

what will be the main use for this new laptop? - that would sway my final decision.
