At first, the Sten looks utterly useless. It has a slow rate of fire for a SMG, and overheats after 16 shots.
However, in my mind it is by far the most useful gun for a covert who knows how to use it.
A very important, oft forgotten fact: Stens are bloody accurate. Their spread is less than half (by diamater of the pattern made by firing at a wall a set distance away) that of a normal SMG.
Compare that to the FG42. This is a good weapon for beginner snipers, as it has a scope, and can also be used as an automatic. However, in order to have any degree of accuracy you need the scope up (and, ideally, prone), which slows you down greatly, and laves you open to attack from the back and sides. Also, when used unscoped, it has wider (about 1.5x) spread than the standard SMGs. Also, its 20 round clip empties very quickly, so you'll end up suffering death by reload a lot.
The Sten has a 32 round clip, and is silenced (the FG42 is unsilenced). Because of its reduced spread, you can use a Sten for mid-range sniping (Bank Doors to the bridge facing them) even though it has no scope.
When caught in close-range combat with a Sten, take advantage of having better accuracy at long range. If you know the area well, run backwards while firing. Also, zigzag (and bunnyhop, if you like), as your accuracy will suffer less than your opponent's.
Oh, and go for their head. It makes an incredible amount of difference.
Also, fire in bursts of about 3/4 shots. This can be coupled with jumping/running by firing a burst while running straight backwards, jumping sideways-and-back while your Sten cools a bit, and repeating the process.
The satchel charge:
The satchel charge is actually surprisingly useful as a weapon. If you are being persued, and have run around a corner, pull out a satchel charge, turn, and throw it behind you while you run. Aim to land it just before the corner of the wall (from your point of view).
Then, go prone, preferrably somewhere obscure (near a wall, half behind a chair, etc), but so you can see the area around the satchel charge. This will make your opponent take longer to spot you, giving you more time.
When they round the corner, twist that dial. Goodbye, Mister Bond. >:] |
