take a look at checkinstall	by codemachine	2004-02-05 10:00:57
If you do follow aix_tom's advice, you might want to use 'checkinstall' to do the 'make install' portion, as it will inform RPM what files you've added. Your apps will work fine without this, but it does give you a clean way to remove something that you installed via source.
