the desire to change one's physical sex is usualy termed transsexual. transgendered is a much more generic catch-all term for all the many different and wonderfull ways in which your gender might differ from the classical male/female norm.

i have hung out with such groups, and have found them to be friendly congenial people from all walks of life, with very diverse viewpoints on what they are and why they are doing "this" (whatever it may specificaly be for them). i haven't been to a meeting in a while, but particularly at the early stages of coming out it was very beneficial to have people to openly share with.

from what you've described i feel yuo would fit right in.

of course there are allways fundamentalists who won't accept any other viewpoint then their own, but if they dominate the group then just look for a different one.
